Pet Winter Safety Tips: How To Keep Your Pet Safe in the Winter
In addition to keeping your pet active, it's important to remember how to keep your furry friend safe during the winter months. Icy surfaces, snow and colder temperatures can all pose a risk to your pet's safety.
Here are a few ways to keep your pet safe during the cold weather.
Let's dig in!
How To Keep Your Pet Safe in the Winter
Bring Your Pet Inside During Cold Weather
If your pet is left outdoors they can freeze, become disoriented, lost, stolen and injured. Additionally, do not leave your pets alone in car during the cold weather as cars hold in the cold and can cause your pet to freeze to death.
Protect Your Pet's Paws During The Winter
Wipe them every time they come in from the outdoors as salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice can irritate your pet’s paws. If your pet has sensitive paws, you can protect them with petroleum jelly or booties.
Take Care of Your Pet's Coat and Skin
Keep their coat longer for warmth and if your pet is short-haired, consider purchasing them a coat or sweater. Avoid dry skin by keeping bathing to a minimum and removing snow when they come indoors.
Watch For the Signs of Hypothermia and Frostbite
If your pet is whining, shivering, anxious, slower than usual or stops moving, seems weak or starts looking for warm places to burrow, get them back inside quickly because these are signs of hypothermia. If your pup is experiencing frostbite, you may not realize until a few days after the damage is done. If you suspect your pet has hypothermia or frostbite, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Avoid Walking on Frozen Water With Your Pet
Stay away from frozen ponds, lakes and other water as you can't be sure if the ice will support your pet's weight and falling through the ice could be deadly.
